Summer Labor Studies!

SEIU Northern New England Council
Summer Labor Studies Institute
July 25-26, 2008
University of Maine - Farmington

Summer Labor Studies Institute is a 2-day union leadership school that brings union members together from across northern New England.

It is organized by the SEIU Northern New England Council, which includes SEIU Local 1984 (New Hampshire State Employees' Association), SEIU Local 1989 (Maine State Employees' Association), and SEIU Local 560 (Dartmouth College).

The event is not limited to SEIU members.  Other unions are invited to attend, and many come year after year - such as teachers, firefighters, and our friends from the Vermont State Employees' Association (VSEA).  Participants have come from as far away as Rhode Island.

This year's Summer Labor Studies Institute will be innovative, fun, and unlike any previous institute.

Instead of offering a menu of workshops, this year's institute will be entirely devoted to building union power.  A special curriculum is being developed for the Summer Labor Studies Institute by the professional trainers/facilitators at Wellstone Action and the UMass-Lowell Labor Extension Program. Rather than choose from an array of short workshops, all participants will be involved in this single program aimed at building skills and knowledge that will result in more union power in our worksites!

In addition to the training, "summer schoolers" also enjoy the casual social atmosphere.  Summer Institute would not be complete without fun nighttime events and a Saturday evening cookout/lobster bake!
